Description

The European Genome-phenome Archive (EGA) has been archiving, managing and distributing biomolecular human data in a secure manner for over ten years. Both data and associated information (metadata) for all the projects are currently centrally stored. In order to accommodate institutional or national restrictions when it comes to data transference, and taking advantage of all the experience and development harvested during the last decade, the EGA is leading a “Local EGA” project within the ELIXIR framework. This federated network of Local EGAs will allow to keep the biological samples in the desired location, which is also expect to dramatically speed up the data transference.

While Local EGA initiative started months ago with the collaboration of several ELIXIR nodes (current status can be seen here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d8tIDZvDGKQ), both the maturity and the number of interested parties have increased. This Face to Face meeting, held at the Barcelona Biomedical Research Park (PRBB), aims to generate the appropriate discussion and agree the following steps. The focus of this meeting is managerial (rather than developmental). Therefore all interested ELIXIR nodes are warmly invited to take part in the discussion and join the project. It is expected that depending on the feedback, events focused on development and technical aspects may also take place in the future.
