This talk will cover ongoing work in the Data Science Campus of ONS in the areas of generating faster economic indicators from ship movements as well as rapid evaluation of the amount of surface water for early warning system using satellite images. Both projects use datasets, i.e. AIS and Earth observations from Sentinel -2, which have substantial volume and velocity and require specialised tools and approaches to enable processing in meaningful time.  Ideas for further work and enhancing the results with data science methods will be discussed for both projects. Practical application aspects of technologies like Apache Spark (Big Data), PyTorch (Deep Learning), Serverless  and Cloud will be covered on high level.
